Overview

Christmas in April?

No... actually you've reached the home of Mortimer J. Maggot. Mort happens to be possessor of the title "Spirit of Residual Christmas™".

Residual Christmas is a devilishly cynical comedy platformer set in the 2000's about Christmas!
Play as your favorite maggot to gain wisdom so you... yes you can rediscover the true holiday spirit that comes with the 26th of December! and each depressing credit card swipe before it...

The game is a Love letter to classic N64 and PlayStation platformers. It is also a tribute to my now passed father, and his website featuring the titular Maggot.

Inspiration
Mort was originally a Christmas ornament decoration my Father made out of spite, turned into a website.

The location of the game is actually based on A real place located in Elberton GA, its a cabin that my family used to own and visit. The place was sold in 2020 and was renovated beyond recognition.

Here are some of the main photos I used when attempting to remake the cabin. Its the main reason the place feels soo... eclectic.

The idea of stencil shadows for the game was actually inspired by how harsh the lighting is in real life, especially at night
Animation
Residual Christmas is my first Foree into the cruel world of Animation blueprinting! for the first release I modeled and created the rig for mort with one simple looping animation
while it was great for capturing the feel of Playing as worm I knew I could do better as a result I created This State machine depending on what the player is doing
Limitations
Residual Christmas is a game styled on older hardware, but that does not mean it was made with a retro engine. I took things that I found interesting from both types of hardware and brought them forward into unreal engine 5

The Limitations I gave myself were
-Face Limits
-no mip maps
-Resolution Scaling

and even though this is more of a Xbox and Ps2 era feature

-Vertex Lights on top of stencil shadows
Screenshots
we hope you enjoy another Residual Christmas!
